EN Arnaud creates elegant and solemn oil paintings of a dark and heavy experiences. The surfaces are thikened by paint, like tweed tapestries of labor-intensive strokes. They create a uniform field which holds the surface in complete equality at every point. Behind this plane, a shallow pictorial space of great compression develops, and this entire space is one of perpetual nervous tension, pushing and pulling in a tight arena. Fundamentally monochromatic, the paintings are in neutral hues or in brooding reds, blues, and ambers. They are strong, serious, resolved presences. His interest is to capture the feeling of alienation and isolation The act of creating art and the phenomenal existence of the art object, glowing, breathing in perpetuity. Arnaud’s paintings very successfully convey the act of bracing against pain, of enduring it with dignity, of covering the most extreme difficulty by means of aesthetic wealth.
FR Empreinte du mouvement de la peinture française de l’école « non-figurative » des années 40, l’œuvre d’Arnaud se caractérise par sa dimension matiériste. Le subconscient est au centre de la réflexion d’Arnaud: composer un tableau, ce n’est plus représenter ce que l’on voit autour de soi mais c’est organiser des formes et nuances pour provoquer une sensation. Arnaud traduit les sentiments avec la valeur expressive des formes et des couleurs. Le choix de la couleur, son application et sa juxtaposition tiennent compte d’une évidence qui vient du subconscient. Arnaud utilise la matière, la ligne, la forme et la couleur pour elles-mêmes créant des compositions chargées d’émotion. |
